Why Acupuncture is Great for Women

Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM) believes the body contains 5 vital substances for life.

By using a combination of acupuncture, herbs, good food and exercise to preserve these fluids you will be given the best opportunity to live a long and healthy life.

Today we are going to focus on one of those fluids – blood and why it’s vital for women.

Facts about TCM blood

  • It’s manufactured in the body using elements of the food we eat
  • It nourishes the body by bringing nutrients to tissues
  • It moisturises the body – so that tissues don’t dry out
  • Blood nourishes and houses the mind keeping us happy
  • It determines menstruation

So why is this vital for women?

Periods. Every month from the onset of menstruation we lose blood. Add in a pregnancy or two which uses up more blood. Maybe an operation? So, it’s quite common to see “Blood Deficiency” in women.

What is blood deficiency?

In TCM this is simply that not enough blood is circulating in the body because it’s been lost or not enough is being made.

Symptoms of blood deficiency

  • headaches / dizziness / blurred vision
  • insomnia
  • feeling cold – cold hands/feet
  • dull pale skin
  • muscle cramps
  • scanty periods
  • dry hair/skin
  • withered/ brittle nails
  • depression
  • feeling aimless

There are blood conditions in TCM that deal with heavy periods, PMS, PMT, period pain and other gynaecological conditions.

Acupuncture is a very useful tool to help bring balance back to your body, easing both physical symptoms and psycho-emotional symptoms, letting you feel normal again every day.
