5 healthy eating trends you’ll see this year
What’s going to be the big health trend of 2016? 2015 saw the rise of coconut oil and bone broth. The good news is that every year that now goes by, people are become better educated and more determined to eat healthy.
Here’s my my list of things that you’ll see popping up everywhere over the coming year:
1. Plant-Based Everything
There’s a misconception that a plant-based diet means going totally vegan. Not so! Plant-based diets simply refer to the idea of a more sustainable eating pattern for both health and environmental reasons: Eat more plants, eat fewer animal products. It also includes some fun ways to incorporate more plant-foods into your diet, like using jackfruit instead of pulled pork.
2. Nooch
Expect to see this everywhere. Nooch also known as nutritional yeast (or a dairy-free Parmesan) has a nutty taste that’s derived from sugarcane or beet molasses. It pack quite a nutrition punch with 8g of protein, 3g of fiber, and three times your daily vitamin B12 requirement in just 1/4 cup of flakes. It’s a great way to give some added flavour to dishes like pasta.
3. Pulses
You’ve probably been eating pulses for years. This legume family includes chickpeas, lentils, dried beans and peas. Now the United Nations has declared 2016 the International Year of Pulses and will be working to make them a household term.
Packed with protein, pulses are also a rich source of fiber, vitamins and minerals and help lower the risk of heart disease and diabetes, lower blood pressure and cholesterol, and help with losing weight. Pulses have a tiny carbon footprint and help enrich the soil they’re grown in, making them great for the environment. Did I mention they’re cheap? One serving of lentils costs about 25 cents.
4. Seaweed Will be the New Kale
Suddenly, everyone is talking about the plant for its nutrient profile and skin-care benefits. Seaweeds are among the most nutrient-dense plants on the planet, and as they have access to all the nutrients in the sea, they are an extremely rich source of minerals. The bio-active substances derived from seaweed provide a beneficial and functional role at the cellular level, contributing to healthy looking skin, hair, and nails.
5. Matcha Everything
Matcha (a Japanese green tea that’s in powder form and is whisked into hot water or milk) is becoming a trendy new staple in pretty much any coffee shop you go to (yes, even Costa!). It’s not just for drinks. Restaurants and cafes have been adding matcha to desserts and brunch menus. We wouldn’t be surprised if the antioxidant-rich green tea started to show up in beauty products or if matcha machines soon occupied a place next to your Coffee Maker in 2016.
